Himalayan Goji Juice:
Goji Secrets They Don't Want Us to Tell You
"A Small Amount of Heat"
In a startling statement to breathe.org, FreeLife wrote us to say they have always admitted to using "a small amount of heat" in the manufacturing of Himalayan Goji Juice:
"FreeLife's marketing materials clearly acknowledge that the company uses a small amount of heat in preparing its Himalayan Goji Juice."
What would you consider as "a small amount of heat"?
We spoke to an Aseptic Solutions rep who clarified the aseptic process. He told us that all juice at their factory is heated to between 260 and 286 degrees Fahrenheit. The process uses an "essence recovery system" (his words) to recapture the boiled-off juice vapors, which are then condensed back into the final juice product.
When heating juice to these extreme temperatures, it only takes a few seconds to zap the juice free of pathogens and other life. Our factory rep told us that from the start to finish, from heating to cooling and bottling takes just 11 seconds. That's why they call it flash sterilization.
By comparison, our Aseptic man explained that "hot filling" (a bottling method FreeLife does not use) reaches temperatures of about 180 degrees Fahrenheit for a much longer time period. That's not yet boiling, and some life still remains with hot filling (see also Aseptic Solutions FAQs).
People will certainly have differing opinions about what is a "small" or "large" amount of heat.
We're only concerned about settling one simple fact that we hope everyone can now agree on: Himalayan Goji Juice has indeed been heat processed and heat sterilized. Thank you.
Aseptic Awareness
FreeLife also tells us that they clearly mention heat sterilization because it says "aseptic process" in some of their literature.
In a letter to distributors, FreeLife wrote:
If we were trying to hide the fact that we were using heat, we would not have told you that we use an aseptic process.
Well, we think the aseptic process has been far from clear in people's minds.
Who would have any idea what an "aseptic process" means? Consumers sure don't have a clue, nor did any of the distributors we talked to.
Meanwhile, people were getting some pretty fanciful ideas of what the aseptic process is all about. (See )
We feel FreeLife needs to properly disclose the aseptic process to its customers and its distributors. Inquiring minds want to know.
